- Our Client is a design and engineering company that specialises in complex infrastructure, process and built environments across the full project life cycle. Its disciplines range from initial architecture to civil and structural, building services, specialist high voltage and process engineering services, programme management and CDM consultancy, using the latest innovations in Building Information Modelling (BIM) for the most efficient and cost-effective design.
They are currently looking for a Principal Engineer – Building Services to join their team based in Manchester on a perm basis
Summary
Liaise with other team members in a multi-disciplinary environment to achieve holistic building solutions to client brief. You will interact with various internal and external contacts and take responsibility for the delivery of projects within time, quality and budget constraints. You will also work closely with clients to develop and nurture relationships that result in new opportunities and repeat business.
Key objectives
- Design and specify all aspects of mechanical building services in accordance with current guidelines, standards and regulations
- Contribute to the design planning, resourcing and fee planning of specific project teams
- Contribute to the development of the mechanical services department as required
To undertake engineering services design and consultancy work on behalf of the client under the direction of the line manager or project leader.
To undertake calculations, production of drawings, specifications and reports, site surveys, construction stage duties, client liaison with members of design/construction teams, project management, costing and any other relevant duty required to comply with the project brief.
To undertake an appropriate level of resource management responsibility and control by:
- Ensuring an understanding of project briefs
- Working to time allocations
- Make steps to minimise expenses and non-chargeable costs
- Produce project cost of further works and resource plans Ensuring support services are made available
- Participate in effective presentations to external organisations, customers and peer groups
- Co-operating with other members of the team
- Reviewing progress plus reporting any anomalies and scope of duty revisions to the line manager
- Updating forward plan workload regularly
- Ensure design intent/commissioning fulfilled during construction stage
- Using up to date IT, technical methodology and information sources
- Regularly reviewing computations, information and contact of project
- Ensuring all work is completed under the company quality assurance procedures
- Reporting any problems/difficulties during project progression
- Assisting in the maintenance/updating of relevant literature/information sources/contacts
- Contributing to development of working practices to improve team efficiency particularly with reference to the use of IT
- Provide feedback on the performance of the department from a technical and operational perspective
- To support and use BIM on relevant projects and undertake the necessary training and CPD to ensure clear understanding of processes and required proficiency
- Ensuring projects are kept within/cost limits as stated at briefing meetings
- Completing time/expense sheets as required
- Responding to clients within framework of commission
- Assisting in development of new clients or opportunities for the company
- Making a positive contribution on how image and efficiency of the company can be improved
- Acting as an ambassador for the company
- You will be a chartered engineer, degree qualified in Building Services or similar.
- A member of a Professional institute such as CIBSE or IET, Fellow would be advantageous
- Proven track record in mechanical services design, in particular the following market sectors:
- Transportation, including Rail, Underground and Airports
- Commercial and Mixed use
- Public Sector, including Education, Defence, Healthcare and Custodial
- Proven track record of project delivery, together with notable projects across a variety of sectors (including science and technology, nuclear, and waste and environmental), major local developments and multi disciplinary work
- The ability to lead teams of engineers as part of multi-discipline design team
- Strong demonstrable communication and interpersonal skills, particularly the ability to influence and negotiate both internally and externally with an open and inclusive style
- Fully conversant with technical and legislation requirements for Mechanical services equipment and installation design and management
- Ability to organise a team to develop designs from RIBA 0 through to 4c
- Experienced in managing external design and vendors organisations
- Ability to understand and approve technical calculations performed by junior engineering staff
- Have a good appreciation of business to ensure commercial requirement to ensure gross margin targets are achieved
- Competent writer of letters, quotations, proposals, presentations and reports
- Experience of low carbon engineering, preferably a CIBSE LCC or energy assessor
- Experience of designing to achieve BREEAM ratings
- Practical experience on-site (Resident Engineer or Similar Role) Preferred
